  -empyre-, Sydney
The -empyre- online list (Sydney) is an international, moderated discussion of international media arts and culture. Its special focus is on critical perspectives of contemporary cross-disciplinary issues, practices, and events in networked media. As an independent, non-hierarchical community and collaborative, -empyre- began in 2002 and is moderated by an international panel who chooses guests and topics, and moderates discussions to retain thematic integrity.  On -empyre- each month the moderators program a specific topic for discussion and feature a group of special guests drawn from a wide range of practices in visual culture, new media, contemporary art, sound arts, performance, and activism.  The list is hosted at the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales, Sydney.

our 'soft-skinned space' is a virtual, or empyrean space of resistance against the loss of internationally fluid, interdisciplinary public fora and space for public speech, as we generate -- on the fly--- a participatory ethos that is both itself a literary text and a networked live communication. Our process cultivates the specific voices of its guests, who are asked to prepare statements reacting to the question at hand ; then to present them online at the beginning of each month; then to stay engaged for the whole month, responding to reader contributions.

What is to be Done? (Education) on -empyre- network

In a world of shifting boundaries, of profound and fundamental changes, a world where universals such as life, death, consciousness and uniqueness are being challenged by technological reality, the question of art, of our relationship to it, the question of its purpose and of its objectives must be tackled...   The Public Secret: Information and Social Knowledge

"If you have come here to help - you are wasting your time -- if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then... I know my life is bound to the lives of these women.
I can't be free until they are free. "

"What is bare life?" discussion on -empyre- network July 2006

"These moments of failed identification, with the need for constant contextualizing question and exclamation marks, suggest that clothes make the man and the woman but that the genitals and shapes beneath these clothes can be complicated. At such instances and when Susana’s viewers get sex identification wrong, the functioning of cultural genitals and the ways we read rather than know bodies is difficult to ignore." (Michele White, on Susan Mendes Silva's Artphone) [EN] [-empyre-]

Bare life as editorial subject: on ‘bare life’ in the network –empyre- soft-skinned space

What are the practice implications for the artist or designer who produces conditions at the edge of ‘bare life”? How does her intervention in sites of traumatic occurrence and recurrence, of traumatic memory, implicate an ethics of exposure? How to generate narrative at the liminal edge of what cannot be spoken of or imaged? [EN] [-empyre-]

  Why Art?

But despite the already “bared” zones of contemporary policy, do we have an alternative not to believe in bare life, to envisage the opportunity of being unsubjected to sovereign power even when this subjection has been accomplished?

Maybe what looks or is declared bare (we see these images through mass media all the time) is much more resistant and heroic than the very images of heroism. What we usually see are the images of the victims, but never the diachronics of what they have to say. And what they have to say is not at all the answers to questions of the journalist...
